When you dream of an autumn wedding, you imagine russet leaves, crisp blue skies and glorious sunshine, and that is just what Charlene and James got for their wedding in October 2018. The pair dreamt of an outside wedding overlooking the sea; an optimistic dream at any time of year, but with the Ocean Kave itself as a back-up venue, we made plans for an outside wedding and hoped for the best!
The couple booked our honeymoon cottage, Royal Celerity, for the duration of the weekend. This is perfect for weddings as the upstairs is filled with opulent romance, from the jacuzzi bath to the super king-sized bed and the balcony overlooking the countryside, but the downstairs is big enough to accommodate the bride’s entourage during a busy morning of wedding preparation and pampering.
The day started off simply perfect; not a cloud in the sky. While Charlene and her bridesmaids had their hair and make-up done, the wedding planning team set out chairs for the outside ceremony while the florist, Amanda Huxtable, put the finishing touches on the sunset rooms. The couple chose a royal blue, rustic theme complete with bunting, hessian runners and lanterns. The tables were named after places in the world of significance to the pair; an eclectic mix of locations, from Fiji to Plymouth! Outside, the row ends, arch and pergola were decorated by the florist in swathes of fabric, flowers, and bunting.
The groom and groomsmen exuded laid-back panache in grey three-piece suits complete with royal blue and white polka dot ties; the bridesmaids complemented them perfectly in stunning, full length, beaded royal blue dresses. Charlene looked simply breath-taking in a low-backed, lace and organza dress, simple veil and Irregular Choice shoes. Following the beautiful service, the guests were served a welcome reception of prosecco, cider and elderflower fizz, with milkshakes and cookies for the children.
The twelve O’clock wedding meant that the wedding party could make the most of the incredible Indian Summer, with outdoor games and a little relaxation in one of the coordinated blue and white deckchairs, or the giant, bespoke deck chair. Group photos ensued, followed by a quick trip down to Westward Ho! beach for the happy couple; the tide was in, which allowed them to capture some incredible shots on the pebble ridge while the wedding guests took to their seats.
Guests had selected their meals in advance from a choice of chargrilled courgette, chilli, feta and olive salad, langoustine cocktail or ham hock terrine to start; a main course of Moroccan lentil tagine, cornfed chicken breast with roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables or Devon roast beef; and for dessert salted caramel chocolate tart, raspberry crème brulee, or lemon and lime cheesecake; everyone agreed that the food was simply fantastic!
One of the advantages of an autumn or winter wedding is that you don’t have to wait too long for sunset, and by the time speeches and toasts had finished, it was time to make the most of the crystal clear skies as the sun receded over Lundy Island in the distance.
As the day flowed into the evening, more guests arrived and, after much admiration of the incredible creation made by Charlene’s friend, Rachel, the cake was cut. The guests revelled the night away with entertainment from Party Starters, a magic mirror photo booth and an evening buffet which included such delights as smoked salmon cocktail, mini steak and ale pies, avocado pate, and an assortment of wraps.
At the end of their dream wedding day, Charlene and James were driven back to their honeymoon cottage. There is no doubt that they were incredibly lucky with the weather, but we think that we were the lucky ones, to have had the privilege of witnessing such a perfect day.
Thanks to Charlene and James for choosing Ocean Kave; we wish you love, laughter and even more luck in the future!
