Just like parents, wedding planners don’t have favourites. But if we did, Catherine and Tim would definitely be one of them! From the outset, we knew that this was going to be a special day. The couple had a good idea of what they wanted but were happy to be guided by our experience of local suppliers who could help them to achieve their vision. As a result, the entire wedding weekend went smoothly, whizzing by in a bubble of fun, frolics and romance.
No strangers to fun, Catherine and Tim quickly recognised that Ocean Kave and Westward Living presented the perfect opportunity for the ultimate destination wedding. Self-catering accommodation, additional communal areas, outstanding views and, of course, an award-winning coastal wedding venue for the day itself were all that the couple needed to make their North Devon wedding weekend one of the most memorable of their lives as well as their guests’.
Festivities commenced on the Friday night with a selection of vegan and non-vegan curries served in the rustic barn. It was a relaxed evening that offered a welcome distraction from any pre-wedding jitters and allowed the bride, groom and guests to wake up refreshed and relaxed on the big day itself.
While Catherine and her bridal party got ready for the day ahead in the luxurious setting of the Royal Celerity bridal suite with make up by Fiona Miller, the groom and his party went for a morning run and a swim in the sea at the nearby Westward Ho! beach.
Guests started to arrive at the Ocean Kave at 1.00 p.m., where they had the opportunity to enjoy the breath-taking views across the Atlantic Ocean before the 2 O’clock ceremony. Catherine was concerned that they may struggle to get into the bridal vehicles so Kathy, ever resourceful, improvised and came up with the perfect solution!
Catherine looked simply stunning in a lace, V-necked, A-line dress. She carried a beautiful, hand-tied bouquet of yellow and cream flowers tied with cornflower blue ribbon. The bridesmaids wore coordinated blue dresses and carried small bouquets of blue, yellow and cream flowers by Twigs florist in Barnstaple. The groom and his party wore traditional grey morning suits with cornflower cravats and handkerchiefs, finished with yellow and cream buttonholes. The overall effect was classic, summery and simply stunning.
The rustic styling and candles of Ocean Kave itself was complemented by yellow, white and blue blooms. The moment that Cath made her entrance to music from acoustic guitarist Pat McIntyre was a moment of magical beauty as the guests reflected upon the special moments to come.
Following a beautiful ceremony, the guests made the most of the pristine English summer day with beer, Pimm’s and traditional lawn games. Guests were treated to a delicious selection of canapes made from locally sourced produce, including vegan tomato tartlets with spinach, vegan rainbow spring rolls, beetroot gravadlax and salmon blinis, and mini jacket potatoes with pancetta and applewood smoked cheddar. Meanwhile, the newlyweds headed to the beach where their photographer, Venetia Norrington, made the most of the glorious sunshine and stunning beach to take photos to help mark their special day.
After enjoying the sunshine, guests entered the simply styled Sunset Rooms, where they enjoyed a scrumptious three-course barbecue. The meal was followed by speeches and toasts; Tim’s speech was suitably entertaining, keeping the guests entranced throughout, and culminating in a real-life “racing grannies” featuring both the bride and groom’s mothers and plastic Zimmer frames and life size cut out of Luna the dog.
Guests were kept entertained by a Roving Artist, who produced stunning cameo silhouettes of the guests, and as the day drew to an end, the guests and newlyweds prepared to party to the dulcet tunes of Sound System. They danced the night away, ending on a high note with the environmentally and ecologically friendly alternative to fireworks and the ultimate entertainment: a mesmerising laser light show.
Following last orders, guests were able to amble up the road to their four and five-star holiday cottages, where they could dream of the spectacular day, safe in the knowledge that they had all day Sunday to relax and recover!
This was a truly special wedding; with 50 guests, Cath and Tim were able to spend quality time, making unforgettable memories with everyone. It was truly an honour to be entrusted with their day, their laid-back natures and irrepressible sense of fun meant the day magical for all involved. This was one magical summer wedding that we will remember for a long time.
