Love And Romance Don’t Stop For Covid

As a bespoke wedding venue, the events of the last six months have been heart breaking for us. We have listened, often in tears, as our couples have shared their own tears, fears and frustrations before making the difficult decision to cancel or postpone the day that they have been dreaming of for years.

Not so for this fantastic couple from Berkshire. The lovely Leah and Wayne were determined that Covid wouldn’t get in the way of their nuptials. And what better way to circumnavigate complex, ever-changing and frankly annoying social distancing rules than to elope?! No trimming the guest list, no symptom tracking; no worries.

We were so delighted that Leah and Wayne kept the faith; after months of phone calls, we were thrilled to welcome them to our first elopement since lockdown! The couple arrived at the Paddocks excited about the days ahead.
Of course, there were some measures that had to be taken to ensure the safety of everyone involved. At Ocean Kave, we pride ourselves on being consummate professionals and part of that is adhering to the rules and gliding smoothly over any bumps without anyone noticing – unless they really look for it. In line with recommendations, Kraft tape marked the floors to ensure appropriate social distancing and a UV sterilising lamp was on hand for the rings and registrar’s pen.

The Kave itself look incredible; Blooms of Bideford had decorated it with an exquisite combination of black Calla lilies and dusky pink roses, and myriad candles created a romantic atmosphere. Wayne’s face when he beheld his beautiful bride for the first time was just wonderful; he couldn’t stop beaming!

Leah looked divine in a strapless lace dress with white converse and, of course, a custom-made face covering hand crafted by Helen Moss at Sew Loving . Her beauty was almost (but not quite) overshadowed by Wayne, resplendent in a black suit and tie with royal purple lining. The setting, the ceremony, the wonderful couple and the extraordinary circumstances made the day all the more poignant and showed that you don’t need 100 people in attendance to have the wedding day of your dreams.

After the ceremony inside the Ocean Kave, the couple headed to Westward Ho! beach where their photographer, Marc Collins, captured the wild beauty of their love perfectly.  A “normal” elopement features in-cottage dining, but as we are unable to offer dining at the moment, the couple enjoyed a locally sourced picnic hamper instead. They took to the grounds, where they enjoyed some of the best food our stunning surroundings have to offer while they watched the sun set on a day that, for a while, they thought might not happen.

If there is something that the pandemic has taught us, it is that we can’t control everything and that, with a little creativity, we can make something truly wonderful out of a challenging situation. And what a life lesson to learn! Leah and Wayne’s adaptability, strength and commitment to each other will stand them in good stead for their future together.

At Ocean Kave we love every wedding, no matter how big or small. However, an elopement is something truly special. No politics, no stress, just two people committing to love each other forever. And in these unsettling times, an elopement wedding is one that is most likely to be able to continue as planned.

It was a privilege to help Wayne and Leah to have the day that they deserved, and we wish them love and happiness in their future together.
